Mr. Pop History – I’m going to take a guess here and say – the year was 1997 when NBC debuted “Homicide: the Second Shift,” a spin-off of its “Homicide: Life on the Street.” The spin-off ran only on the Internet at NBC.com.
From Pat C – Hello Mr. Pop. Your website says that MTV founder Bob Pittman wound-up running “Century 21” – a real estate company! My question – did this man have any professional failures?
Mr. Pop History – He tried to launch a heavy-metal radio network called “Radio Lisa” but it never got off the ground. And, he had a failed TV production company and both of these were after he left MTV.

Mr. Pop History – Thank you. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed above 1,000 for the first time back in November 14, 1972. It closed above 2000 on January 8, 1987. 3000 you ask? April 17, 1991. More? 4000 on February 23, 1995 and on November 20, 1995 – the 5,000 mark. Up and up as the Dow closed above 6000 for the first time on October 14, 1996.
From Bryce M – Crooner Bobby Vinton once remarked he did a show in honor of NY DJ Jack Spector, who he said introduced his first hit on the radio. Can you or do you have any information on this?
Mr. Pop History – Wow – you’re taking me back. Jack Spector was one of the great all-time NY radio DJ’s making his at WMCA radio and helped build it to top ratings during the 1960’s. I found this article from March of 1970. It confirms Jack Spector first played “Roses Are Red My Love” back in 1962 and Mr. Vinton honored Jack Spector at the legendary Copa.
From Janette D. Randy and the Rainbows did a song called “Denise” and I recently heard they did – I believe, a follow-up song what was along the same kind of sound. Can you help?
Mr. Pop History – It was one of the catchier tunes from the summer of 1963. Then In 1979, a new group called “Blondie” recorded “Denis” – a sort of female answer record. Same tune and almost the same lyrics as the original “Denise.” Now – along comes Randy & The Rainbows in 1982 with a song called “Debbie” It was a “thank you” to Deborah Harry of Blondie. Gotta love it. Here it is… another catchy tune from Randy Debbie – Randy & The Rainbows (Salute to Debra Harry)and the gang.

Mr. Pop History – It was March 10, 1995 and you guessedt special from the hotel. it – it opened with a lot of press. MTV did a concert.

Mr. Pop History – He teamed with Tupac Shakur on “Never Had a Friend Like Me” from GRIDLOCKED’d. Jackson said he was never paid by Death Row records.
From Matt P – Mr. Pop – I remember the point-counter-point segment on “60 Minutes” but fail to remember the participants? Thank you.
Mr. Pop History – In its history – “60 Minutes” had two commentary periods. The first one was with Shana Alexander and James Kirkpatrick during the 1970’s. The other – was very short-lived – and lasted less than six months – around 1996. It was supposed to be a “hipper” version of the earlier edition. There were three – Molly Ivins, P.J. O’Rourke and Stanley Crouch, but producers panicked when “Dateline NBC” was scheduled opposite “60 Minutes” and they were out.

Mr. Pop History – And thanks! They did with “Hanna-Barbera” records. The year was 1965 when they released records by Danny Hutton (later of 3 Dog Night), the Guillotines and separately – they tried to cash-in on their own cartoons. Here’s their most prominent record release – back in October of 1965,when “The Flintstones” aired on ABC-TV Friday nights. Pebbles and Bam Bam sang this song – then HB hurried this release – “Let The Sun Shine In.”
