From BL – What was the name of Snoop Dogg’s tongue-in-cheek comedy show on MTV?

Mr. Pop History – Yes Snoop had a TV show that wasn’t to be taken seriously – “Doggy Fizzle Televizzle.” It was first aired as a pilot back in November of 2002. It was described this way:

“Snoop will mix sketch comedy with music and man-on-the-street bits. On the pilot, he’ll try out for the Oakland raiders, spoof nursery rhymes and work undercover at Arby’s.” Snoop Dogg

From Meagan Z – Mr. Pop – there is a pop record that was a major hit – #1 twice in less than two years. What was it?

Mr. Pop History – Those of us around remember “The Twist” by Chubby Checker. A #1 record twice – within 16 months! First in September of 1960 and then in January of 1962. That’s amazing. Here’s an ad – the first time around for Chubby Checker’s “The Twist” when it was climbing the charts back in July of 1960.

When you think about this record’s total chart longevity during the years 1960, 1961 and 1962 it’s simply astounding and my guess is – it breaks another record for most weeks heard on the radio – relative to current hits. A good guess – for both rides is 6 months

From Jeanne E – “The Tonight Show” has always done well for NBC, but you said there was a time when it did not?

Mr. Pop History – That is correct. It made a little money with Steve Allen, but after he left – there was no real host – and it lost money. What’s interesting is – local stations were making money with their late night ads – but NBC was not! Then Jack Paar took over in July of 1957 and it began a turnaround. It was called “Tonight” but when Paar took over – the show was named after him. The Johnny Carson era ushered in “The Tonight Show” title. NBC logo

From Jason R – When did our U.S. currency get it newer look?

Mr. Pop History – It all began with the new $100 bill back in September of 1995. That’s when we saw a larger Ben Franklin, a new-fangled watermark that duplicated his pic, plus a security thread and other features that were supposed to make it harder to duplicate.

New designs for the $50, $10, $5 and $1 bill that resembled the same type of architecture followed at the rate of one per year. So, the total currency facelift was completed by the end of the 1990’s. Hope that helps. hundred dollar bill

From Diane U – Mr. Pop – When was President Bill Clinton impeached? It wasn’t for long – was it?

Mr. Pop History – President Clinton was the only President to be impeached. It’s true. The House voted to impeach Clinton in December 1998 on two articles of perjury and obstruction of justice in connection with his affair with White House intern Monica S. Lewinsky. Two months later – in February, the senate voted to acquit him. Bill Clinton impeached

From Nina O – Hello Mr. Pop History. I’m sort of puzzled and hope you can help. I remember a website called pets.com that used a sort of sock puppet – a dog and after they folded – I saw the same sock puppet being used on another commercial? Thank you.

Mr. Pop History – That is correct. The famed pets.com sock puppet went away when that website shut down in November of 2000. But did it? No. A few years later, it became the mascot for those 1-800-Bar None commercials. It’s highly unusual that the same icon was used for two separate companies/products. In fact, it may be the only time in pop history that it happened. Good question! sock puppet

From Olivia J – Mr. Pop – Can you give me a little background on a TV show called “Sabado Gigante” and that guy who’s on it. I don’t speak Spanish, but it looks interesting.

Mr. Pop History – It’s a unique show – in that – it has been on the air since 1962. The man’s name is Mario Kreutzberger, but everyone knows him as Don Francisco. The original show launched in 1962 in Santiago Chile on Sunday and was originally titled “Omnibus.” After a short time, it moved to Saturdays and the name (Giant Saturday)“Sabado Gigante.” It originally was an 8-hour show. “Sabado” was first broadcast in this country on Univision – back in 1986 and there it remains. It’s as popular as ever Don Francisco

From Belinda O – Mr. Pop – Nice piece of Beatles trivia this morning. I didn’t know Barbara Bach was in the audience at Shea Stadium!

Mr. Pop History – It is true. When the Beatles performed at Shea Stadium – 1965 and who was in the audience? The future Mrs. Starr – Barbara Bach!Ringo

From Tab G – What was the biggest selling soundtrack of all time?

Mr. Pop History – “Saturday Night Fever” sold over 40 copies and is the biggest of all time. No one comes close. saturday night fever

From Sol J – It seems that every television newscast has a ticker update at the bottom and my question to you sir, when did this trend begin?

Mr. Pop History – Earlier this decade and you can thank CNBC. I remember it being a big deal when ESPNews copied the trend and that was back in 2001. CNBC
