From Karie L – Mr. Pop – Madonna once pulled a whopper. She was ticked off at people downloading music, so she leaked fake tracks?

Mr. Pop History – It’s a great story from 2003 and shows just how the Internet and the music world can collide.

Fed up – the singer featured tape loops with a profane admonishment to people trying to download cuts from her new “American Life” album. They thought they were getting real songs. That ticked off someone – because her website got hacked with a not-so-kind message scrawled across the front page. Another website – featuring amateur types – took her raw tracks and made dummy Madonna recordings. Thanks www.mrpopculture.com

From Martin C – I heard a morning show talking about the most influential game shows of all time – and the top of the list was “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire” but they didn’t say why? Do you agree? Thank you.

Mr. Pop History – Yes and no. The success of “Millionaire” helped producers pitch a new kind of show – “Survivor” – which in itself – is really a game show. You could say, that set-off a whole new wave in television – for better or worse.

The problem is “Millionaire” got burnt-out so quickly because ABC scheduled it almost every night of the week – so – it didn’t last long.

Let’s face it – One game show influenced them all – and that has to be “The Price Is Right.” Its long-time announcer – the late Johnny Olson, is the subject of a book by another gameshow announcer (and not a bad one at that) – Randy West. Check out “Johnny Olson: A Voice In Time.” It’s an amazing effort that spans well-over 400 pages.

Go to Amazon.com and type in the book’s title.

From Genovese S – Mr. Pop – I recently found out that Frasier’s Peri Gilpin has a brother and a sister who act. They are Mark and April. Do they still act?

Mr. Pop History – They do, but their careers were never anything like Peri – who is still very active. None of them look a-like and Peri has a striking resemblance to her late father – Jim O’Brien – a beloved Philadelphia DJ and newscaster. Here’s Peri and a picture of her father. From Joe T – Both Howard Stern and Don Imus – both based out of NY – once had staff members get in trouble for doing illegal deeds and telling about them on the air. Who were they?

Mr. Pop History – Yes and both were earlier this decade. “Cabbie” told Howard Stern’s audience he didn’t pay taxes a certain year and ended up in jail. Sid Rosenberg, a sports anchor on the Imus show, bragged he was getting DirectTV for free. And they sued him. Thanks www.mrpopculture.Sid Rosenberg
