When Was Miley Cyrus On “American Idol?” – Pop Culture. This Week In History.

Mr. Pop History – It was a big, big deal when Hannah Montana appeared on “American Idol.” Her first AI appearance was back in April 2008. She’d be back a year later – almost to the date. Here’s that announcement – from the first week of April, 2009:

More Miley… She’s coming to “American Idol.” The 16-year-old superstar, who is gearing up for the release of “Hannah Montana The Movie,” pre-taped a performance of her hit song, “The Climb,” for the hit FOX reality competition on Wednesday night. The performance will air on April 15.

When Was The Fox-TV Show, “X-Files” At Its Peak? Pop Culture History.

Mr. Pop History – I took this from the www.mrpopculture.com week of January 15, 2002 – when the show was being canceled. Can you believe it’s been that long?

After nine years, Fox-TV’s “The X-Files” will be folding. Overall, the show has been averaging 8.7 million viewers, downdramatically from its peak season (1996-1997) when the weekly audience was 18.3 million.

When Dick Clark Went Up Against Ryan Seacrest – Different Specials. Pop Culture Trivia.

Q: Ryan Seacrest has been in the Dick Clark camp for sometime – especially with Clark’s ABC-TV New Year’s Eve specials. Didn’t Seacrest compete with this very same show?

Mr. Pop History – Yes. Let’s go back to the year 2004 – New Year’s Eve. Clark had just had his stroke – and would you believe – Regis Philbin was asked to take his place that year? Actually – ol’ Rege did pretty well. But – look over at Fox-TV where Ryan Seacrest was doing the same type of show.  Here are those listings, plus other competition that night:

Dick Clark prime time – Regis Philbin fills-in for ailing Dick Clark with Catherine McCord and Mike Richards. Ashlee Simpson is the West Coast host.

Carson Daily – Conan O’Brien, Brian Williams, Tina Fey, Amy Phehler, Jill Hennessy, Dule Hill, Kathy Griffin and Donald Trump. With performances by Maroon 5, Avril Lavigne and Duran Duran.

Fox-TV – Ryan Seacrest (New Year’s Eve Live From Times Square)– Hoobastank, Evanescence.

MTV New Year’s Bash – hosted by Damien Fahey, La La Vasquez, Quddus, Hilarie Burton and Vanessa Minnillo. With Green Day, Snoop Dogg, Ja Rule, Fat Joe, Jimmy eat World, Ryan Cabrera, Lindsay Logan, Destiny’s Child, Blink 182, Good Charlotte, Fabolous, Ludacris, Ying Yank Twins, Simple Plan.

Loud TV Commercials – Are They A Thing Of The Past? Pop. Culture. Trivia.

Mr. Pop History – What’s amazing is – this problem dates all the way back to the 1950′s. Broadcasters always, always denied the accusation. Just a few weeks ago – back in September – Congress finally did something about it. So – let’s see if it happens. It is quite annoying. Here’s an article from a radio/TV engineering authority:

“The United States Senate unanimously passed a bill late Wednesday, September 27th, to require television stations and cable companies to keep commercials at the same volume as the programs they interrupt. The legislation, sponsored by Senator Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island, requires the FCC to adopt its recommendations as regulations within a year and begin enforcing them a year later. The House of Representatives had already passed similar legislation. Before it can become law, minor differences between the two versions have to be worked out when Congress returns to Washington after the November 2nd elections.”

Ben Stiller Question. Pop. Culture. History.

From CR – Ben Stiller question: wasn’t he discovered by way of comic clubs?

Mr. Pop History – Ben Stiller auditioned and won a spot on MTV. From there, he was spotted by Fox, which aired his short-lived – “The Ben Stiller Show” in 1992. Not a big ratings-grabber, it took two years to develop and showed off Stiller’s inventiveness. From there – he went into movies.

Fox-TV was a great launching pad for talented comedians such as Stiller and Jim Carey.

This Week In Pop Culture History And Much More.

From Frank B – ABC had a show that ripped off Fox’ “Cops.” What was the name of this show?

Mr. Pop History – It was 1991′s “American Detective.” It was a broader interpretation of Cops, I suppose, as it focused on jobs, actions and private existences of the men and women who protect the public.
