From David L – Mr. Pop – What Do You Think, Or Do You Think Howard Stern Will Show-Up On “American Idol?”

Mr. Pop History – It would be a great move for Howard. He’d be the perfect replacement for Simon Cowell and I know the producers want to do it, and so does Howard Stern.

Now, it’s all about money – but producers have an edge in that – Howard not only wants this – he needs this.

I think it will happen. But, let’s see. Thanks www.mrpopculture.com Stern

From Evan J – Mr. Pop – I used to watch Howard Stern’s E! show and it seemed to be a long run. A friend of mine said he thought they still ran it, but they don’t.

Mr. Pop History – I don’t remember the exact date – but it began in 1994 and ended on July 8, 2005. A long run for sure.

It was great for Howard – who didn’t have to do anything extra; after all, it was his daily radio show edited.

From John P – I heard Howard Stern may be considering coming back to commercial radio. His satallite show is great and I hope he doesn’t leave.

Mr. Pop History – I hope not. Stern left the confines of commercial radio so he wouldn’t be dogged. And – he wanted complete format freedom. He’s got that – but – look out – Howard’s looking back! If he goes back – he’ll never be able to do the shows he wants to do. Or will he? He’d have to compromise and do a wimpier version of his show. It would have to be Howard Light. Remember, guys like Al Sharpton are out there (just ask Imus). The landscape is way worse now – worse compared to earlier this decade – especially for guys like Stern.

But, because he’s just-about disappeared from celebrity-land (compared to his halcyon days) – he may believe he has no choice, then blame the media for his woes, lest he gets out of line. I don’t know. I’ll have more respect for him if he sticks to his guns. He made a big, big, big deal about leaving commercial radio – and how bad it was – and the people who program/enforce it. He couldn’t wait to get into satellite radio.

He’s a master at PR What we all need to really know – it doesn’t matter. He’ll do what he wants – and justify it somehow. In the end – you can either respect him or not. And, if you lose respect, why even bother listening?

Sometimes, it’s just better to know when to go away. Howard’s left his mark and doesn’t need to work another day. Do a Seinfeld – and come back with big projects every so often. Going back to regular radio would be bad for Stern. Those great days on morning commercial radio; the 1990’s are long gone. He hit the top and when he got there – didn’t like it. Then he went to satellite where his format dreams came true (and so did the loot).

From Joe T – Both Howard Stern and Don Imus – both based out of NY – once had staff members get in trouble for doing illegal deeds and telling about them on the air. Who were they?

Mr. Pop History – Yes and both were earlier this decade. “Cabbie” told Howard Stern’s audience he didn’t pay taxes a certain year and ended up in jail. Sid Rosenberg, a sports anchor on the Imus show, bragged he was getting DirectTV for free. And they sued him. Thanks www.mrpopculture.Sid Rosenberg

From Brandon L – Radio embarrassments… I have a radio question for you? I hear so many “magic potion’ commercials on radio – and I was wondering – does anybody on the radio side care about what they put on the air?

Mr. Pop History – Not really. as, as long as your “mercial” is decently produced and you have the money for air time, you can get on the radio. Stations will take anybody’s money, or so it seems.

The other trend is getting anybody on staff to be a spokesperson for a product. I mean anybody – from a personality, producer to an intern. It’s quite amazing. It’s all pressure to get the buy.

One of the biggest radio scams was something called “Body Solutions” – another weight-loss program. These guys bought time on top radio stations – and used DJ’s and personalities to hawk the product. This was back during the later 1990’s. The company was later accused of deceptive advertising. Those personalities and stations were eventually left holding the bag – because the company got way behind on their payables. Stations weren’t paid and the personalities had egg on their face. Body Solutions was one of radio’s big embarrassments.

Another one – does anybody remember the mattress company that advertised heavily on Howard Stern’s morning show around 1990? Turns out they were re-selling old mattresses! Stern himself use to endorse this company with “live’ reads on his show. WOW! Did he have egg on his face! I know someone who bought one of those mattresses.
