Remember MTV “Unplugged?” Who Was The First To Sell Music Out This Series? Pop Culture History Music.

Mr. Pop History – When it debuted back in 1990, MTV “Unplugged” was loved by music critics. Artists singing their songs the acoustic way – and it really made for some interesting song translation. But, Paul McCartney became the first artist to release his MTV appearance when Capitol put out “Unplugged” The Official Bootleg” in the summer of 1991.

By the summer of 1992 – that success spurred “Unplugged” CD success by the likes of Mariah Carey, Eric Clapton and Sting. It was sticking – and there was much more to come!

Maurice Gibbons of the Bee Gees – Gone For Eight Years… Week of January 8, 2003

And some other tidbits from that week eight years ago:

Music news –
Passing – Maurice Gibb – one of the three famed Bee Gee brothers. He was 53.

Barry Gibb tells the BBC that the Gibb Family would fight to discover the truth about brother Maurice’s death in Miami at Mount Sinai Medical Center.

This week – The Rolling Stones live on HBO.

Eminem sings a licensing deal wit Nesi Apparel to create of sportswear called “Shady.”

Tommy Mottola – the former Mr. Mariah Carey – is stepping down as head of Sony Music Entertainment in a reverse of fortunes for the company. No doubt, Mottola had many high points at the company – bringing in such stars as Jennifer Lopez, Celine Dion and Mariah Carey. Sony Music Entertainment is in the dumps now – posting operating losses of $142 million for last year.

Mariah Carey Low Point. Pop. Culture. History.

From Jimmy H – Mariah Carey was a true superstar during the 1990′s, but hit rock bottom shortly thereafter. When?

Mr. Pop History – Due to her bizarre public behavior and sinking album sales, I’d say it was when Virgin Records dropped her. This was in 2002. She had a little comeback in 2005 with “The Emancipation of Mimi” and today – she’s there – but not really a shining star.
