In testimony before Congress this month, Costner walked through the device’s operation—explaining how it spins oil-contaminated water at a rapid speed, so as to separate out the oil and capture it in a containment tank.

Mr. Pop Culture Report – May 1

Saturday, May 1st, 2010 | Hot Pop Culture, Today In Pop Culture | No Comments

Passing: (The Buck) – Leslie Buck (87) who designed the iconic Anthora coffee cup – popular in the 1960’s and 1970’s has passed away.

Hitmaker Usher says “American Idol” and shows of its ilk are taking a toll on the music business. Usher says, “The true art form of music is being lost, because it seems so easy that everyone can do it, and that it can happen overnight. Television is a lie. It can’t happen overnight. The artist who thinks that it can just comes and goes. The reason why great singers cannot exist in this time is maybe because they’re not properly managed, and maybe they don’t understand the full gamut of what being an entertainer is.” Usher recently made an appearance on “Idol” as a music mentor.

The person who found and sold an Apple iPhone prototype says he regrets not doing more to return the device to its owner, according to a statement provided by his attorney. Brian J. Hogan, a 21-year-old resident of Redwood City, California, says although he was paid by tech site Gizmodo, he believed the payment was for allowing the site exclusive access to review the phone. Gizmodo emphasized to him “that there was nothing wrong in sharing the phone with the tech press,” according to his attorney Jeffrey Bornstein. On April 19, Gizmodo, which is owned by Gawker Media, published a bombshell story about the iPhone prototype, which had apparently been left at the Gourmet Haus Staudt in Redwood City. It was left behind by an Apple engineer named Gray Powell.

Peter Lopez (60), a successful entertainment attorney who was married to actress Catherine Bach was found dead in an apparent suicide.Bach played Daisy Duke in the 1980s TV series “The Dukes of Hazzard.”Lopez was Michael Jackson’s’s music attorney for several years. He also represented The Eagles, Michael Buble and Andrea Bocelli and.

Out Of The Woods – Tiger Woods said he will return to golf next month at the Masters, ending a four-month hiatus brought on by a sex scandal that shattered his image as the gold standard in sports. “The Masters is where I won my first major and I view this tournament with great respect,” Woods said in a statement. “After a long and necessary time away from the game, I feel like I’m ready to start my season at Augusta.” Woods has not competed since Nov. 15 when he won the Australian Masters for his 82nd victory worldwide. Twelve days later, he crashed his car into a tree outside his Florida home, setting off shocking revelations that he had been cheating on his wife.

Estate Slate - Michael Jackson’s estate has signed the biggest recording deal in history: a $200 million guaranteed contract with Sony Music Entertainment for 10 projects over seven years, according to a person familiar with the deal. One of the albums will be of never-before-released Jackson recordings that will come out in November.

Mr. Pop Culture Report – March 9

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010 | This Week In Pop Culture History, Today In Pop Culture | No Comments

Lindsey Lohan has filed a multi-million dollar lawsuit over an ad which allegedly used her name and parodied her life for profit. The “Mean Girls” actress is seeking $100 million in damages and compensation over the commercial for financial firm E-Trade, which depicts a baby girl called Lindsay as a boyfriend stealer and a “milkaholic”, reports the New York Post.

Betty on Saturday Night Live - The latest chapter has White confirming, on the record, that she will in fact be appearing on the NBC late-night series. “Yes,” the nearly 90-year-old legend told People magazine Sunday night, while attending the Elton John Oscar bash. This after thousands blogged about her appearance in a Super Bowl commercial – and said they wanted to see her on SNL.

And The Sequel To Phantom Is… “Love Never Dies” – the sequel to Lloyd Webber’s global hit “Phantom of the Opera” debuts in London  “Phantom” is a tale of gothic romance set in the Paris Opera that has been seen by 100 million people around the world since it opened in 1986. It is still playing in London and New York, where it is the longest running show in Broadway history.  “Love Never Dies” picks up the story 10 years on, with disfigured genius the Phantom relocated to the bright lights of New York’s Coney Island and still besotted with beautiful soprano Christine Daae.

Zero On The Richter Scale - Andy Richter who was sidelined as Conan’s sidekick on the “Tonight” show – says NBC just wasn’t cool about Conan’s ousting and Leno’s reclaim to  “Tonight” show fame  “NBC, definitely, everybody said they were going to do something and they didn’t,” said Richter, implying the network broke long-standing commitments it made to O’Brien. It all ended much quicker than he could have imagined, said Richter, who figured his “Tonight” job was “as good as it gets in show business.”

Look At News And Pop Culture Dec 8-Dec14 2008

Monday, December 15th, 2008 | Uncategorized | No Comments

Mr. Pop Culture expands and now includes the last full week in news and pop culture. Now updated each week. Here’s a look at the week of December 8, 2008. To be published on www.mrpopculture.com

Media conglomerate Tribune Co. has filed for bankruptcy protection. The owner of the Chicago Tribune, the Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Cubs and other properties has $13 billion in debt. Severe reductions in advertising this year because of the recession has put pressure on the company. Most of its debt comes from the complex transaction in which the company was taken private by real estate mogul Sam Zell last year. Although the next major principal payment isn’t due until June, analysts say Tribune has been in danger of missing lender-imposed financial targets.

A military fighter jet slams into a San Diego neighborhood Monday, killing four people and destroying two houses as the plane burst into flames. The pilot of the F/A-18D Hornet jet ejected safely before the crash, according to a statement from Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.

The arrest this week of Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich revealed alleged conspiracy and bribery schemes so brazen that veteran investigators and prosecutors could barely contain their revulsion.”The conduct would make Lincoln roll over in his grave,” said U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald. In breathtaking detail, the criminal complaint describes the efforts of the Democratic governor and his chief of staff John Harris, who also was arrested, to “sell the U.S. Senate seat” once held by President-elect Barack Obama for a high-paying job, promises of campaign funds, a Cabinet post or ambassadorship or corporate-board seats for Blagojevich’s wife, Patricia.

The British press reports that British troops will begin pulling out of Iraq in March and be largely gone by July.

Households, hit by declining net worth, have cut back on their debt levels for the first time on record as loans remain scarce.

The Federal Reserve releases its latest quarterly look at consumer and business finances showing that households reduced their debt levels 0.8% at an annual rate in the July-September period, the first drop on records that go back more than 50 years.

The decline in household debt levels is evidence of the severe credit squeeze that is occurring as banks, saddled by billions of dollars of losses in mortgage debt, have tightened lending standards and made it harder for people to get loans.

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan on Friday asked the state Supreme Court to remove Gov. Rod Blagojevich from office temporarily because his arrest on federal corruption charges makes him unfit to serve. The aide who was arrested with the governor on corruption charges, John Harris, dropped off a letter of resignation Friday and won’t return to the office, his lawyer, Terry Ekl, said.

President George W. Bush makes a farewell visit to Iraq, a place that defines his presidency for better or worse, just 37 days before he hands the war off to a successor who has pledged to end it.

David Gregory is named permanent host of “Meet the Press.” The NBC newsman is best known for his touchy exchanges with President Bush — who nicknamed him Stretch — and with administration press secretaries since being named the network’s chief White House correspondent in 2001.

Jay Leno, expected to hand the “Tonight” show reins to Conan O’Brien in May, will stay with NBC and get his own prime time talk show. The new show will be similar to the Tonight Show format but with more elaborate sketches and taped segments. And though giving Leno a prime-time slot protects O’Brien from competing directly with him on another network, it risks draining audience and top-notch guest bookings from the future Tonight host.

Paula Abdul says the Fox network and American Idol producers knew Paula Goodspeed had stalked her, and allowed the woman to audition for the show anyway. “I said this girl is a stalker of mine and please do not let her in,” Abdul said Monday during an interview with Barbara Walters on her Sirius XM radio show. Ms. Godspeed, a former “American Idol” contestant, was found dead of an apparent suicide in a car near Abdul’s home last month.

Michael Jackson’s glove is going on the auction block. The white glove, which inspired countless copycats, quips and Halloween costumes after it was unveiled in the 1983 video for Jackson’s hit Billie Jean, will be part of a five-day auction in April. Jackson is also unloading the grandiose gates that once led to his Neverland Ranch, along with more than 2,000 other personal items.

Passing – Van Johnson, whose boy-next-door wholesomeness made him a popular Hollywood star in the ’40s and ’50s with such films as 30 Seconds over Tokyo,A Guy Named Joe and The Caine Mutiny, dies of natural causes. He was 92.

At the movies –

Four Christmases

Twilight

Quantum of Solace

Nothing Like the Holidays

Maureen McCormick shatters her wholesome “Brady Bunch” image in her autobiography, where she writes about binging on cocaine, trading sex for drugs and battling depression.
