June (1980) – After subbing for Johnny Carson some 30 times on the “Tonight” show – David Letterman gets his own show on NBC-TV. Due to low ratings, the 90-minute Mon-Fri daytime show was quickly pulled back to 60-minutes.
July (1982) – (Africa) Crocodiles eat 30 people a month on the shores of Lake Mweru Wantipa near the Zaire border, the Zambia Daily Mail reports. “The lake is invested with so many human-hunting reptiles. Villagers are dragged into the lake by crocodiles as far away as one-third of a mile from the shores of the lake,” Titus Kabwe, the government’s district secretary in the lake region told the newspaper.
(1959) – On Huntington, Long Island NY – The pictures of Mr. And Mrs. Roland Earl’s wedding were stolen form the photographer, so they did the whole thing over again. Photographer Charles Caleca said the pictures he made at the Earls’ first wedding in May were stolen form his car before the negatives were developed. So Huntington Town House, caterers for the wedding, decided to foot the bill for a retake complete with the same minister, same wedding attendants and even most of the original guests. A special Suffolk County sheriff followed photographer Caleca safely back to his studio.
April (1985) The ASPCA calls for a boycott of the Ringling Bros. And Barnum & Bailey Circus because four animals – billed as “living unicorns”” appear to be farm goats with surgically implanted horns.
May (1980) Pope John Paul II issues a directive barring all Roman Catholic priests from serving in public office. Most immediate affected is Rep. Robert F. Drinan (D-Mass.) the only Roman Catholic cleric in Congress. |
