Ronald Reagan

From William N – The description “Teflon” President” was first used with Bill Clinton? Or does it go back further? Thank you.

Mr. Pop History – Sometimes politics can be downright entertaining. This description was first hung on President Reagan back in 1984. Take a look at this:

Vice President Bush loves it that President Reagan has been labeled The “man in the Teflon suit.” The handle was given to him in a recent speech by Rep. Patricia Schroeder (D-CO) who said nothing sticks to the President. “He is responsible for nothing – civil rights, Central America, the Middle East, the economy, the environment. He is just the master of ceremonies at someone else’s dinner.” Said Vice President Bush – “Ronald Reagan does have a very good way of taking firm leadership positions but of not getting down into the mire and trying to respond to lots of silly charges.”

Come back soon, as I answer, to the best of my knowledge, another one of your pop history/culture questions.
