Dr. Laura on KMPC in 1980

From Julie V – I am a big fan of Dr. Laura Schlessinger – the radio psychotherapist. I believe I heard her mention she worked as a DJ or worked with DJ’s at a station before she made it big. Can you confirm this?

Mr. Pop History – Dr. Laura was never a disc jockey, but she sure worked at music stations. Here’s an ad touting the new Dr. Laura Schlessinger show on AM music station KMPC, Los Angeles back in 1980. Both Robert W. Morgan and Gary Owens were two great personality DJ’s and their shows played music. Dr. Laura was strictly talk. This was an era where AM station KMPC was trying something different and had blown-out two personality DJ’s to go into this new direction – talk at midday. In fact, a lot of music AM stations were reassessing their future as music was disappearing from the AM band. But, that’s another story.

Come back soon, as I answer, to the best of my knowledge, another one of your pop history/culture questions.
