June 1984 – Paul Rubins on his Pee Wee Character –
“I think part of my appeal is that it’s so borderline that people can never tell whether Pee Wee’s for real or not.” “Childhood is really the most important influence on who we are. It’s where all our roots are. Maybe that’s why kids seem to really love me, because they react to me on more of a gut level. That’s what I like about what I do – it’s either funny or it’s not. You don’t have to sit around and analyze it."

December 1984 - Now touring - The Fresh Festival – a caravan of top New York rappers, breakers and deejays – in 29 cities. Touring are Run-D.M.C., Kurtis Blow, Whodinia and Newcleus and the Fat Boys.

May 1984 - Michael Jackson visits the White House – Michael Jackson is hailed by President Reagan for allowing his hit song “Beat it” to be used in commercial against drunk driving. Jackson wore his trademark sunglasses and single white glove for the brief ceremony on the White House South lawn. He kept his glove on when he shook hands with President Reagan. “Well, isn’t this a thriller,” said Reagan as he stepped on stage with his wife, Nancy and Jackson. “We haven’t seen this many people since we left China.” Jackson said only 13 words – “I’m very, very honored. Thank you very much. Mr. President and Mrs. Reagan.”

Early 1983 - On his weekly radio address – President Reagan said that he does not like the word “Reaganomics” because it sounds like a fad diet or an aerobic exercise, but he insisted that his economic policies with that label are working. “Somewhere along the line, our economic program got tagged with that label. To tell you the truth, it isn’t a name I would have chosen,” said Reagan.

Come back soon, as I answer, to the best of my knowledge, another one of your pop history/culture questions.
