| Duane Allman |
From Carl C - I remember the early 1970's being
filled with rock 'n' roll deaths - Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison and
Duane Allman. Jim Morrison's death didn't reach the press until
a few days after he died. But I don't remember ever reading about
Duane Allman in the paper.
Mr. Pop History - Duane Allman's death did
reach the papers, but some three weeks later. From November 20,
1971:
"Duane Allman organizer and lead guitarist
of the Allman Brothers Band, died in a motorcycle accident in Macon,
Ga. On Oct. 29. According to police reports, he apparently lost
control of his motorcycle to avoid crashing into a tractor-trailer.
He died on the operating table at Middle Georgia Medical Center,
three hours after the accident.
The Allman Brothers, a six-member group based in
Macon, had recently completed a tour of the West Coast and was getting
ready for a tour of the east. The group recorded for Capricorn Records.
He is survived by his wife, a daughter by a previous marriage and
his brother, Gregg, also a member of his band and his mother."
