Question - How far back do music videos go? When
were they first used?
Mr. Pop History - The first music videos
per-say, can be traced back to a local television music show in
1966. "Boss City," seen only in Los Angeles, produced
rudimentary videos for in a top-10 countdown format. The idea was
an extension of a successful radio station: "93/KHJ. KHJ DJ's
were seen lip-syncing certain hit records. Other videos actually
contained performing artists, but not many, due to production costs.
Soon after, a Hollywood-based production company got the idea to
film rock and pop groups and syndicate these tapes to local television
rock and pop shows throughout the country. A station in Grand Rapids
with a local dance/teen show, could now feature big-name groups,
via tape.
